Bio
A songwriting trio of Dav James (guitar, bass, keys, producer), ViNa Nguyễn (vocals), and Deifante Walters (drums), HUNGER FLOWER evolved in the midst of the pandemic from the jazz/alt-pop of VINA AFTER DARK to tell stories through a newer, powerful, and unapologetic sound that spares no listener’s heart.
Dav is a Welsh/French multi-instrumentalist and producer raised in France, the UK, and Canada. ViNa is a Vietnamese songwriter and vocalist, tinkering on guitar and keys, and a budding producer. Deifante is a Jamaican multi-instrumentalist but primarily HUNGER FLOWER’s drummer, coming from the US and Canada.
Dafydd (Dav) James (he/him)
Dav is a performing musician and music producer around the Mohkínstsis/Calgary, Alberta area. Actively the guitarist, producer, keyboardist, and songwriter of HUNGER FLOWER, Dav brings extensive musical experience from France, Canada, and the UK, having lived, practiced, and performed music in all three places equally.
ViNa Nguyễn (she/they)
Fiction writer and songwriter from the Vietnamese diaspora, ViNa was born and raised on Treaty 6 and 7 territories and began songwriting on guitar in their late-twenties. Their childhood was filled with RnB, alternative, and pop, with predominantly yellow music, inspired by the voice of Khánh Ly: melancholic, war and loss set to powerful vocals. It’s when they got their sad-song affinity. Weepy, cathartic ballads with a touch of poetry. Perfect for transforming their grief and rage with love and hope.
Deifante Walters (he/him)
Deifante began drumming in 2008 and performed live in Mohkínstsis/Calgary as a member of three different bands. He’s played on four home-recorded albums and one studio album.
He’s built his skills from drumming weekly for four years to an audience of 50, while playing and improvising to unfamiliar music and helping with sound engineering.
